America Should Not Create a Vacuum In Iraq

Prof Dr Colonel (Retired) K Prabhakar Rao

The entire third world and the Democrats are up against President George W Bush against the handling of war in Iraq and Afghanistan, more particular about Iraq. Third world press claims that American policy in Middle East is in free fall, its crucial support system knocked out by the most trusted Arab ally Saudi Arabia in the region. The press with glee has highlighted that King Abdullah Bin Abdul Aziz of Saudi Arabia has stated at the Arab summit in Riyadh that the Anglo American Occupation of Iraq was illegal. He said, “In beloved Iraq, blood flows between brothers in the shadow of illegitimate foreign occupation and hateful sectarianism….. we will not allow forces outside the region to determine the future of the region” (1). This is being interpreted as if America has lost the support of Saudi Arabia and that it has been identified as a devil in the region. These critics wishfully think that the days of America are numbered in the world and that very soon Saudi Arabia would send Americans from their country too. It is a very common practice in Indian press to highlight any small thing to highlight as American failure and project it as the cruelest and as a devil incarnate in the entire world. Unfortunately these occasional utterances no way spell out the actual policy of Saudi rulers and they can not exist without support of West. Their oil exploration and development is solely based on Western support and militarily they are weak. They would be soon swallowed by the more militarily dominant Iran without American support. This Saudi Arabian show of occasional solidarity with Arab world is a common show probably to keep other Arabs in good humor and to keep alive their Arab origins. They did similar things during the last conflict between Hezbollah and Israel. The third world Indian press at that point of time glorified Saudi Arabian actions as the new Arab solidarity against ill perceived American imperialism and hegemony and clamored that a new Arab force was emerging to teach Americans a strong lesson. The entire show was of no use and in the process, Lebanon was severely hammered black and blue.

Earlier Saddam Hussein was the king pin in Middle East politics. Most of the critics and American haters and ill wishers were very happy when WTC was attacked along with Pentagon and praised the insane criminals who crashed the jets into the targets with innocent passengers and appreciated that at last the American pride has been thrust in to its boots. Such lunatics even danced in the streets after the calamity in New York. It was perceived as if America was destroyed and erased from the face of earth.

The continued conflict in Iraq, mounting death toll of American military personnel and the never ending suicide killings and executions of Shiites and sectarian killings are the causes for the great worry and aversion to the conflict by the Democrats (2). Iraq war was one of the main thrust against international terrorism and a potential threat to the peace was nullified with elimination of Saddam Hussein from the power. Saddam paid the penalty for the cruel rule and summary killings that were ordered at Dujail after an attempt was made on his life at the town. However third world and Muslim sympathizers view elimination of Saddam Hussein as a planned trial and execution in which America played the band from behind. However it was entirely an Iraqi court decision to execute Saddam Hussein, his deputy and other senior aides (3) (4) (5).

With loss of majority in both houses, President Bush is waging a lone battle for stabilizing Iraq. The War against instability is being waged since few years and Saddam Hussein’s capture after the war and bringing him to justice is considered as a victory of sorts for USA. But the victory can not be complete unless peace in the country is established and some workable understanding is achieved for running Iraq. Iraq has not yet stabilized. Its own security forces and police set up and the governing machine are not yet strong enough to tackle the militancy and sectarian blood bath. In this scenario, Democrats are pressing for withdrawal from Iraq leaving the Iraq to winds. This would be most in appropriate. Any how, President George W Bush has said that he would veto such move and would go ahead with his plan of seeking solution to Iraq, obviously meaning continuing the battle in Iraq against the lawlessness (6). Any novice in international handling and stability and war against terrorism even would not subscribe to the proposal of Democrats. American sudden withdrawal would spell doom to the new Iraqi Government and soon it would be over run by the Iran sponsored terrorists and would turn into an AlQaeda camp. Involvement of Iran in Iraq has been established and America at all costs should prevent dominance of Iran over Iraq. Soon Saddam Hussein would be replaced by Iranian inspired Mullah wielding Weapons of Mass Destruction and putting Israel at severe and grave threat. Israel’s existence would be at stake. American and British sea routes in Gulf would be severely threatened.

The recent capture of British navy men and soldiers by Iran in the seas and within territorial waters of Iraq speaks for the hostile posture of Iran and it also indicates the things in waiting in Middle east and Gulf(7).There were also photographs in press with news that the British soldiers gave a statement that they entered Iranian waters knowingly. These statements can not be believed and appears to be fabricated. Some critics are seeing the incident as initial probing actions that are taken up in any military campaign in the initial stages before major assaults are launched. Rumors are already afloat that America is already engaged in fight with Iran under the garb of Iraqi forces in Iraq. Iran is not new to creating crisis by holding hostages from enemy country and it already has done this once with American hostages for one full year after the Iranian revolution in 1979. Failure to discipline Iran at that time has cost America dearly and Iran has emerged as the abettor of terrorism in Middle East. It has armed and created Hezbollah and fuels all activities against Israel and US (8). Do the Democrats expect that all such anti American activities and threats would come to a complete halt if US forces leave Iraq lock stock and barrel? Will the terrorists come dancing and embrace Americans thanking them for leaving Iraq for them? The answer would be in negative from any sane mind. Iran has been spitting venom all these years against USA and Israel. It is most tragic that the Democrats are turning a Nelson’s eye to the threats made against their nation and its existence. The threat of Terrorism has assumed the form of Goliath of Biblical times. Is it not relevant to remember the heroic deeds of young lad David who killed Goliath so bravely single handed and cut off his head with his own sword, and did not run away in fear? Withdrawal from Iraq is amounting to running away from Goliath unbecoming to the memory of illustrious David.

Leaving Iraq is not that simple as leaving Vietnam or Philippines. The situation in Middle East is very complex and is just not comparable to Vietnam. American withdrawal all of a sudden from Iraq shall have long lasting ramifications in the region causing serious instability, further rise of terrorism, anarchy, occupation by Iranian fundamentalist and trigger happy Mullahs and America would be risking itself more towards the danger of terrorist blackmailing and attacks in very near future. They have to set Iraq right and discipline Iran to secure safety for Israel and middle East.

Thank God........ Iran has relented

Dear readers,

It is  much relieving and happy to note that the Iraninas  have released Britih Army and Navy personnel after two weeks of detention and interrogation.  The publicised apologies by the British service men   in the press and other media is nothing but a sham and  they were left  as probably Iran did not want to escalate the issue and draw the wrath of the world. As it is, Iran is going through an international crisis and confrontation on nuclear issue. It is good they have not chosen to harm the servicemen by torture and released them. Some ray of light  can be seen. Neverthless West should not loosen the guard on nuclear issue  as  no country has used nuclear technology only for peaceful purpose and they made bombs either openly or cladestinely. Even India when exploded its device  during the regime of Indira Gabdhi,  at the pitch of the voice it was declared that it was  an explosion for peaceful purpose. There is nothing like peaceful explosion. The devices  claimed to be meant for  construction purposes would be real bombs if dropped on cities and facilities  during confrontation. World should not be carried away by   Irans  contention that it is meant for energy generation, Even former Iranian President Kahatani  on a visit tio India declared that Irans intentions are clear. It will never pursue  atom Bombs. Every one said same and produced bombs.  The entire Middle East scenerio would  suddenly change if Iran produces a bomb and blackmails the West. It may not be able to launch on American main land immediately or in near future, but it can reach  many European cities and nations. There could be direct confrontation  in Middle East as Isreal would be seriously threatened and it would dominate Iraq issue if USA withdraws from Iraq. America in its own interests should not withdraw and  rather should maintain presence like in saudi Arabia if Middle East  has to be balanced  and if Iran  is to be contained. The third world including India  and some of the anti American Muslim nations  would  seriously  shout around. But America should do what is best for its security and safety. You can not risk yourself because some one is feeling is bad about it.
