Erich Fromm on Destructiveness
Submitted by reido on Sat, 01/27/2007 - 17:30. behavior culture ethicsBill
Visiting the library for Fromm's The Art of Loving (which they have reserved for me), I checked out what looks to be a thorough treatment of the opposite of love. I really think it will relate to your book, but if not, it already has opened my eyes to some things. Most notably, Fromm disagrees with the notion that aggression is innate in man. He points out that much of our thinking has been conditioned to accept that destructiveness is just part of man's nature, much of that concept based on comparisons with animal behavior.
Religion and Communism
Submitted by K Prabhakar Rao on Fri, 01/26/2007 - 10:51. china communism hungary india religion religious persecution soviet union spiritualityIs Communism itself a religion, or is it the emodiment of all that most religions strive to awaken adherents to grow and to live beyond? This article explains the roots of Communism in the Modern era from the philosophies of Carl Marx and Friedrich Engels through its implementation in China, the USSR, to its failure to deliver on its promises and consequent disintegration. More important however is the analysis here of the resulting killing of the soul that Communisim has wrought.
From the article:
When people join a party such as Communism, the human spirit does not get inspired from inwards. On the other hand, people identify themselves as members of a group with a common objective and are ready to fight for it and in this case, it would be hatred to wards a section of people. They loose their spirit and become mechanical robots and as a cog in a wheel. Life is purely mechanical devoid of any challenge except to listen to the propaganda of communist philosophy of class hatred. Marx stated,” It is not the consciousness of men that determine their existence, but rather, it is their social existence that determines their consequences while those with open mind think other way. Unfortunately, Communism does not believe in universal life and respect for human spirit that which is the hall mark of any religion. Under the myth of discipline the rights of individuals are razed to the ground. Communism demolished under its feet the human dignity, intellectual conscience and love.

I explained how Backster with his lie detector discovered that plants register human emotions, and are affected by them, and how Vogel discovered that distance had no diminishing effect on the ability of plants to receive thought energy from humans. The inverse square law so beloved of physicists did not apply. This work is summarized in the The Secret Lives of Plants by Tomkins and Bird.

Well, a great many of the kind of people who would read this blog from choice are among those who consider that the year 2012 is a kind of watershed in the history of Earth and those currently living on it. The Hopis and the Mayans and several other sets of people have ancient prophecies in which this date is, to put it bluntly, the end of time.
Variation on a Theme

Mike's suggestion was to expand on a theme that I mentioned ...something that I see in Christ.
Bill said a few words: "Christ is the universal connector. Not the founder of a new religion, but the end the dividing walls and the bridge between peoples. Paul talked only about Greek and Jew because that was his audience. But the concept was much broader."
Love is the Basis of All Religions
Submitted by K Prabhakar Rao on Fri, 01/19/2007 - 09:57. love religionThere are many religions in the world that have evolved over a period of time and followers of all these religions have one aim and goal. It may be called bliss, realization, and union with infinity, reaching eternal truth or being saved. The aim is how to be enlightened on the path that they have decided to tread on? The famous Vedic Sanskrit prayer verse is highly relevant (1):
Tamaso ma jyotir gamaya
(Out of darkness lead me O Lord into light)

Submitted by bill on Sun, 01/14/2007 - 18:23. erich fromm loveThe following is quoted from The Art of Loving by Erich Fromm.
The ability to love depends on ones' capacity to emerge from narcissism…This process of emergence, of birth, of waking up, requires one quality as a necessary condition: faith. The practice of the art of loving requires the practice of faith.
…
Rational faith is rooted in productive intellectual and emotional activity. In rational thinking, in which faith is supposed to have no place, rational faith is an important component.
…
The history of science is replete with instances of faith in reason and visions of truth. Copernicus, Kepler, Galileo, and Newton were all imbued with an unshakable faith in reason. For this Bruno was burned at the stake and Spinoza suffered excommunication.…This faith is rooted in one's own experience, in the confidence in one's power of thought, observation, and judgment, While irrational faith is the acceptance of something as true only because an authority or the majority say so, rational faith is rooted in an independent conviction based upon one's own productive observation and thinking ,
The Purpose of Man's Life
Submitted by K Prabhakar Rao on Sat, 01/13/2007 - 15:26. buddhism Christianity Hinduism judaism purpose in life SikhismThe most interesting questions that a man faces in this world are, “why God has created world and what the purpose of man’s life is and what are the goals?” It would be necessary to know the origin of world, and man to know the purpose of his being in the world. All religions give explanations for these questions as per their beliefs.
