Stefan Merten: peer money is a contradiction in terms
Syndicated from: P2P Foundation on Mon, 06/30/2008 - 23:25 P2P Economics syndicated blogsContribution by Stefan Merten in the Oekonux mailing list:
The following is something I promised Michel to do. It has been triggered by the use of the term “peer money” which I think is a contradiction in terms. This is an attempt to give reasons why I think that money and peer production are generally in contradiction.
Having said that I should also say that they can walk together for some time but according to germ form theory that is no contradiction to the contradiction thesis. But one should keep in mind that to use money for peer production projects is always a twisted approach because of that contradiction.

It's too simple to say that the new media are killing off the old media. Interest in political news is sky-high, and new and old media each need the other to supply material and drive attention. It’s worth mentioning that their is no science without theory. The human mind is wired for creating theories. That is why there is a neural network built into our brain/mind system. It is wired to consider the un-manifested.

On the relation between open design communities and their physical production partners
Syndicated from: P2P Foundation on Mon, 06/30/2008 - 00:45 P2P Economics syndicated blogs(the following may be a useful summary restatement of an issue that we have discussed here quite a few times)
A key issue is how a mode of production that is successful in the creation of ‘immaterial value’ is co-dependent and can co-exist with the sphere of material value creation.
The problem can be described as follows:
Immaterial production deals with non-rival or even anti-rival goods that can be produced through the self-assemblage of interconnected brains, the result of which can then be made ‘universally available’. This works without any problem for software and what is generally called ‘content’.

Networked scenius, private patronage, and the partner state
Syndicated from: P2P Foundation on Sun, 06/29/2008 - 00:45 P2P Business Models syndicated blogsRemember Ian Skerret ‘s (Eclipse Foundation) quote a few days ago ?
It is a myth that committers are volunteers. The committers for the established open source projects are nearly all paid by companies to commit code to open source projects.
This reminds us of an uncomfortable truth: peer production, in order to work, needs a core group of committed ‘leaders’, with a nearly full-time attention to the project. But such a full time engagement is impossible to sustain through pure volunteering, unless you are, somehow a ‘rentier’, i.e. you have a full-time job which gives you freedom, you are a student on a research stipend, living on unemployment benefits, living off a heritage, etc…

The New Creation in Paul: Summary and Implications for the Church
Syndicated from: open source theology - collaborative theology for the emerging c on Sat, 06/28/2008 - 13:23 new creation syndicated articlesI began this series of posts about the old and new creations while coiled in a self-defensive posture. As a non-Christian, how do I respond to Andrew’s justification of the Yahwistic genocide recorded in Deuteronomy 7, a mass slaughter of Gentiles by Jews that harkens back to the Flood and foreshadows the Last Judgment? For Andrew this mass eradication of entire nations exemplified God’s ongoing project of separating the elect microcosm of the “new creation” from the corrupt macrocosmic “old creation.” While it’s possible to infer new/old creation distinctions in certain historical events and turns of phrase that appear in the Old Testament, only Paul actually uses the words and concepts explicitly. Does Paul draw the distinction between old and new creations the same way Andrew does?

They are effectively cut off from vast quantities of potentially useful research, scientific literature, emerging ideas and potential collaborators.
