GOLDEN WORDS FROM SAINT POET VEMANA

Vemana a saint poet is believed to have lived in the state of Andhra Pradesh in India during 17-18 centuries. He enjoyed worldly pleasures and company of women in his youth without a check and is believed to have renounced the world at a later stage much disillusioned with the way of world. His poems are popular with common men and he spelt out his poems in simple Telugu poetey that could be very easily understood. His poems reflect the social and political conditions of that age and ills in the society. The European officer C Brown of British Government who was an officer in the related district where Vemana roamed and lived has done a great amount of research work. Some of his Telugu poems are presented as translated English poems that send an universal message to the people of the world.

Know it is  futile to search for God

Through the pages of scriptures and scores of books

God is revealed to only the  worthy and noble men

Thus spoke Vemana at all corners and nooks

5

Lord Vishnu who overcomes all illusions in the world

Finds himself overcome by the illusion of Laxmi, his wife

For a common man things are much difficult to seek God caught in illusion

Thus spoke Vemana to the people struggling in a life

6

Men struggle to seek God caught in illusions

He has no control over his various senses during his life

None can seek God caught in the swirl of his senses

Thus spoke Vemana to men caught in strife

7

God is everywhere and one cannot describe him

He is free of all traits but in pot of water like a shade

Pots are many, but sun beaming in them is only one

Thus spoke Vemana and called a spade a spade

8

In the heart of every one God resides

But around places in search of him men run

They fail to seek god in spite of their struggles

And Vemana thus spoke to men and made fun

9

Worship Lord Shiva based in ones heart

And search the God that manifests within

Nothing would be greater than this way

Thus spoke Vemana to men caught in the worldly din

10

Know it is futile to roam in forests and holy places

Keep ones body clean and struggle to keep mind on God

One is sure to seek the God in this way

Thus spoke Vemana without any fad

11

One would get the comforts in this world without efforts

When God bestows grace on such men

God is the basis for pain and pleasures

Thus spoke Vemana to people there and then

12

The make up made by a woman is of no use

When the husband neglects her and fails to call

All the thoughts would be futile if not graced by the God

Thus spoke Vemana to one and all

13

In the age of Kali all the people have only one way

It is the trait of mental stability and control

One can seek God only with control of mind

Thus spoke Vemana to people on the whole
