Hell of a Problem
It seems to me that the idea of eternal damnation is what divides us. Some think that if they act out of turn and then die without repentence they will burn in Hell. Others think you gotta do a whole lot to get sent there. Either way, it is said by people who promote this idea that believing the wrong thing could be enough.
I think this is the single biggest reason there is so much discension in religious cirlcles. No one will compromise because it might mean their salvation if they do (perhaps arrogance plays a role as well, but hell is a significant contributor). How does this problem get solved? The Bible is at best ambigious on this subject once the translations of hell are corrected. Paul suggests many times in his writings that everyone will be reconciled to God eventually. Yet the fear that we will be punished eternally lives on.
