Will America Withdraw Into a Cocoon?

USA today is going through a difficult and complex phase of involvement in conflicts in the world against determined terrorist onslaught who declared war against it. USA has always been the leader and beacon of light for liberty and freedom in the world. Hordes of freedom fighters who were persecuted in their native countries found asylum in America. Some of these organizations at a later date took advantage and plotted against the country. The present conflict with AlQaeda of Bin Laden Group is an example. The nation has evolved out of bitter struggle for liberty from the clutches of England after a war with the Englishmen. Since then, it has maintained a high profile and a special position in the world where every one looked at it with reverence, for inspiration and guidance. After Industrial revolution, America progressed rapidly on technological and industrial front and grew into a major world power in all aspects. It played key and decisive roles in the World War I and World War II. With acquisition of Nuclear weapon it attained the position of super power. It stood for liberty and democracy and automatically it got involved in cold war with the communist block after the Korean War. It has shown great restraint during Korean War and did not attack mainland of China inspite of great provocation (1). The war was limited to use of conventional weapons.

ARE ARABS REGROUPING TO DESTROY ISRAEL?

Prof Dr Colonel (Retired) K Prabhakar Rao

The recent war between Israel and Hezbollah which is based in Lebanon has reportedly resulted in much publicized (Third world glorified) regrouping of the Islamic forces in Middle East with sole aim of destroying Israel. The conflict between the two was entirely due to the provocative actions of Hezbollah and it first attacked Israel intensely with rockets. Israel had to retaliate and had no option. It is quiet natural that an attacker initially has an advantage of surprise in any war. As a consequence, Hezbollah gained some credits when it could strike the Israeli battle ship near Haifa and seriously damaged it by firing C-802 shore to ship missile supplied by Iran. Similarly, it’s Katyusha rockets supplied by Iran also found their marks (1). This however does not form the basis for intense chest beating on the streets by Arabs in Lebanon and other places that they have defeated Israel and that the myth of invincibility of Israel has been blown up.

Taliban is Getting Stronger and Reviving

Prof Dr Colonel (Retired) K Prabhakar Rao

Taliban was ousted from Power in Afghanistan after the intense pounding by the US led allied forces immediately after Sept 9, 2001 attack on World Trade Center in New York. Taliban was created by Pakistan in their Madrasas to counter Soviet occupation forces in Afghanistan duly abetted by Western agencies and after the pull out of Soviet troops Taliban assumed the power in the State. The country returned to the most medieval and obscured ideology where women were forbidden from going to schools. Men were judged by the measured lengths of the beards. The country became a den for drug trafficking as a source of revenue. Al Qaeda emerged in Afghanistan as a notorious outfit and the top leaders including Bin Laden were harbored in Afghanistan. The regime of Taliban turned fundamentalist and the terrorists even hijacked an Indian air craft with passengers to Afghanistan to get the release of fellow Kashmiri terrorists who were imprisoned in India. Taliban destroyed statues of Bamian Buddhas that were nearly 1600 years old against world opinion. Attack on World Trade Center was planned by Al Qaeda and consequently Taliban were thrown out after the attack on American main land by the terrorists (1). Large numbers of Taliban escaped into neighboring Pakistan and are hiding in Waziristan, the most difficult tribal land. These areas were known as North West Frontier Agencies during the British rule in Indian Sub Continent. There is a very great sympathy for Taliban in Pakistan. This was also evident from the rushing of thousands of Pakistani fundamentalist and crazy youth wielding all types of weapons crossing the border and rushing into Afghanistan, yelling and shrieking when US forces attacked and invaded Afghanistan to capture Bin Laden and dethrone Taliban.

Iran the Democles Sword on Israel and US

The small Jewish State of Israel surrounded by it’s Middle East enemies craving for it’s blood has existed by sword ever since it’s formation after World War II. Jews were greatly persecuted in Germany where scores of Jews were done to death in the concentration camps at the instructions of Adolph Hitler, the Fuhrer of Germany. At last, they found a place of their own in their holy land. However Muslims in Middle East view Jews as the occupants of their holy lands and are determined to destroy the State of Israel. Wars have been fought between the Arab States and Israel in 1948 (I st Palestine War), 1968 (six day war) and 1973(Yom Kippur war). There have been many smaller conflicts with neighbors such as Lebanon, Palestine Liberation Front and Syria. In all these wars, Israel has come out victorious. The State of Egypt that led most of the major assaults reconciled to the existence of Israel and signed a peace treaty with them after Yom Kippur war. This of course resulted in the assassination of Egyptian President Anwar Sadat at the hands of fundamentalists. Jordan too has made peace agreements with Israel. Iraq that became powerful in the region under Saddam Hussein who was a staunch Israeli hater and during 1991 war, he even contemplated attacking Israel with chemical weapons that he used against Kurds. Iraqi aircraft had to fly over its neighbors Lebanon and Syria for dropping bombs on Israel (1). However, he developed cold feet and fired only Scud missiles with TNT explosives into Israel. Nuclear Bomb in the basement of Israel was the basic deterrent for the change of mind (2). The coalition forces led by US subdued Iraq that was a major threat to world peace and President Saddam Hussein was toppled who is now facing trial in Iraq. With elimination of Iraq as a threat to world peace and as a major force in Middle East, Iran has emerged as a major force and trouble maker in the region.

Home from Iraq

Hello all, I just wanted to say that I am home from Iraq and thank you all for your support and prayers. I am enjoying time with my family and friends and am back home at church. Attending chapel services is great, but not the same as a church home.

I boarded the plane and never looked back and I have not looked at any news about the war since I left. It may take me some time to come to terms with my experience, right now I am just glad to be home.

Islam at a Crossroads

Islam is a major world religion today and has entered all parts of the globe. In most of the Middle East nations, it is the State religion while in some of the other countries, the populations consist of large number of Muslims. The religion of Islam has made great impact on the world affairs right from the days of it’s founding. The great Turkish Empire and modern Arab Nations such as Egypt, Syria, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Iraq, Kuwait, Emirates, Saudi Arabia, non Arab Iran, influenced world politics greatly. New nations under Muslim rule such as Pakistan, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Afghanistan and many African Nations such as Sudan, Uganda and Libya emerged over a period of time and are influencing the world political situation from time to time. In a nation like India, the Muslim invaders attacked Indian provinces in 11 Th century and the regular invasions followed from Kabul in Afghanistan. By this time, Islam was already 500 years old in the world and has swept across the Middle East countries and entire populations in these nations adopted Islam as the religion either by force or voluntarily. The invasions in India resulted in overthrowing of local Hindu States and Islam got a firm foothold in India in 11 th century. Islamic rulers had a sway in India for the next 500 years till the English grabbed the power under East India Company and later by the Crown of England. The atrocities on Hindus during Islamic rule resulted in development of deep fissures between the two communities and as India was edging towards Independence from the British yoke, Muslims opted for a separate nation fearing domination by majority Hindus and finally it could not be prevented. The outcome was the partition of India.

World Religions and Religious Tolerance

Tolerance towards others is a very important trait for any religion if world peace is to be maintained. All Eastern religions have been tolerant in this aspect. Hinduism, Buddhism and Sikhism are the pioneers in this aspect. The scriptures of Christianity and Islam have also taught universal love, compassion and brotherhood. However, the aspect of God became the point of focus and conflict.

Middle East, The Ever Boiling Cauldron With Hatred Toward The West

Islam always represented danger and menace to West and is seen as a threat to Western civilization. Many Jews and Christians seized on the belief that something fearful in the faith of Mohammed (PBUH) had made Sept 9/11, 2001 attack inevitable. Many feared, a new Crusade against Islam would soon ensue. After the above attack, Islam has been identified more than ever in Western mind with violence, intolerance and fanaticism (1). However, the leaders of the West were highly balanced and President George W Bush of the world’s only Super Power and the aggrieved party made it very clear to the world that he believed Islam to be a religion of peace and he had no quarrel on this account. It was declared that the gruesome act was the senseless violence by a section of fundamentalists in Islam who are bringing discredit to their religion.

Evil and Philosophical View of World Religions

Evil is a part of human life. Although man was created by the God as believed by most of the religions, he has been given the option of ways of leading his life. He may choose a path of truthful living or get entangled and trapped in the vices and the resulting sins. The force that tempts a man to seek pleasures on a sinful path is referred as Satan (in Semetic religions) who has rebelled against the God. In Hinduism the evil is associated with Kali (source of evil). Buddhists refer it as Mara. Therefore, evil is also present in the world and it is for a person to decide and take decision for leading a life free of sin on this earth. Man is basically tempted by five traits such as greed, lust, ego, attachment and anger. All the world religions accept this fact. The Prophets (Peace be on them) of all religions always stressed that the mankind must try to overcome such traits. Apart from above, senses of pleasures are smell, touch, taste, vision and hearing. Human beings are prepared to go to any extent to derive pleasures through the above and it is likely that more a person enjoys the pleasures, more he would crave for these things. Evil lurks on these paths to grab them when limits are exceeded. Falling a prey to one evil leads to another evil. As an example, a person addicted to drinking alcohol is likely to crimes such as theft, murder or even rape as he has no control on himself. One evil leads to another evil. Every religion rightly condemns evil in it’s own way and no religion glorifies evil.

Truth is a Two Edged Sword

As frightening as it is to some, freedom of speech and assembly are still the best weapons against darkness. That is, enlightenment—shining light on darkness—is the best solution. These articles by Dr. Rao are good examples.

But to use enlightenment as a tool, we must muster the courage to face our own shadows, our own closeted skeletons, our own failures and our own misdirected attempts at misinformation. That is, when I shine a light on your blemishes or dark secrets, that light will eventually illuminate some of my own. For American business and political leadership, shining a much needed light upon the dark intentions of our self-declared enemies, means the eventual unveiling of some dark deeds carried out by themselves in their own interest over the past century or so. Because they (perhaps we) refuse to own their own shame, they cannot credibly shine the much needed, unfiltered light on the intentions of our aggressors. In other words, the US government (also British, French, etc.) and the business interests to which some major players within in it are beholden, are severely limited in the use of enlightenment to dislodge the darkness from our shores and the Middle Eastern nations in which this deadly strain has been cultivated and nourished over the past century, by the fear and dread of exposing their own past dark dealings.
