The Problem with God

Perhaps the greatest barrier to sociable and fertile discussion between religious and non-religious folk is the question of God.1 God is THE defining barrier between Theists and Atheists—for example. And almost as potent: defining God or gods separates adherents of one religion from another. That is: Theology is perhaps the most divisive undertaking in human history—next to war, anyway. Kinda seems backward, doesn't it?

Help Sam Harris

"Why should I?", you might ask. Well, Sam is preparing a new neurological study of what happens in the brains of believers and non-believers as they ponder certain questions or experience various stimuli, and he and his group of researchers are trying to design the study to be as fair and unbiased as possible. They'd like to get responses from both Christians and non-believers to a series of surveys; those responses will help with the study design. They are particularly interested in getting survey responses from Christians, so I'm posting this link here, because my experience has been that the Faith Commons attracts a variety of different sorts of people, most of whom consider themselves Christian.

Offensive Defense in Religion

In tactical terminology and in Military parlor, there is a word called Offensive Defensive. This is one of the important military strategies in waging war. The strategy can be defined as the general methodology of action without getting into smaller details. As an example, US strategy today is seen to get hold of control over world’s oil output at different places and influence them to it’s advantage. (This should not be seen as blame towards the great nation.) The critics of US today are generally blaming US identifying with this. In offensive Defense during war, the troops hold our own ground mostly at the borders facing the enemy areas and they just do not hang on to their posts waiting for enemy actions. They send active and offensive patrols into enemy territory for gathering information about enemy sites, position and strength of gun locations, Tank (Armored fighting vehicles) placement and the nature and size of tanks, enemy defenses, movements and supply routes. At times, they even draw fire from enemy to know their strength, alertness, will and capabilities and types of weapons that have been deployed by the enemy. At times, minor quick attacks are also planned on isolated enemy positions apart from conducting ambushes against enemy patrols. Thus, defensive actions are not just waiting in locations awaiting enemy. There is greater military activity although troops are in defense.

Coming to the subject of God and his existence under discussion, it is opined that there has always been a clash between religion (Can not be generalized and termed fundamentalist) and those who do not subscribe to the concept of God.

Does God Exist? Arrogance Wins the Debate Because Wisdom Failed to Show

The recent debate between Atheists and Christians over the existence of God left me wondering whether there is a more important question that we should be concerned with. That question is this: What is the benefit to humanity?

Both groups seem hell bent to prove something, but I don't believe it has to do with God. For Atheists surrounded by a majority that molds its life, and even their lives through tyranny of majority, around this deity, attempting to set the record straight might seem indispensable for intellectual and political survival. For believers who mold their very lives around this deity, it might seem that their very survival is at stake. Others questioning and denigrating the reason for what they do and why they live as they do is an affront to their very being. However, while I may sympathize with both groups, I identify with neither.

Pursuing God

It seems to me that God, wisdom and happiness all exist only in the pursuit for humankind. We can never obtain, attain nor truly know any of these. We can only pursue them. And this may uncover one of the difficulties with religion.

The Blasphemy Challenge

In Internet Time, The Blasphemy Challenge is old by now—old enough to get notice by MSM (Main Stream Media), specifically ABC's NightLine here. But it is still worth discussion. Reactions to the video include those who either hate it or love it—including atheists who see it as an impediment to their being seen as normal, good and wholesome people.

A Rationalist Manifesto

Truthdig asked [Sam] Harris to write a charter document for his thesis that belief in God, and appeasement of religious extremists of all faiths by moderates, has been—and continues to be—the greatest threat to world peace and a sustained assault on reason.” That document, titled An Atheist Manifesto makes a strong indictment of organized religion's failure to make the world a better place and to fulfill its claims. He also gives examples of, and argues that, religion has actually made the world a less humane place. But his main point, at least the point that I got, is that religion is unreasonable and that those subscribers who are reasonable, the “moderates” among believers, are accessories to the crimes of fundamentalists.
