DESCRIPTION:OCTOBER 14  \n12-1 p.m. Workshop at Wilshire Baptist Church in the Sanctuary \n1-2 p.m. A $10.00 box lunch will be available for those who come in person and wish to continue this conversation with Rev. Butler. \nRegister below for in person or online attendance. The workshop will be live-streamed. Those who attend in person will be required to wear a mask and practice social distancing. \nWhether or not you believe that the Bible is inherently political\, no one can refute that it is used to support political ends. The Bible is studied and taught to decipher a holy path to making decisions in community about power relationships. What is the role of human beings in the ongoing task of managing the stewardship of God’s Creation\, described at the very beginning of the Book of Genesis? \nFaith leaders have a great deal of power when we teach Scripture. We know that the same text can lead people in totally divergent directions when it comes to making political decisions. How do we know which way is right? And how do we accept the truth and sacred responsibility of teaching Scripture in a manner that reflects God’s love for us and all Creation? \nOur answers to these questions are shaped in large measure by how we read the Bible. Reverend Jennifer Butler\, the CEO of Faith in Public Life\, has been on the front lines of faith-based organizing and activism. Recently she published a book entitled “Who Stole My Bible: Reclaiming Scripture as a Handbook for Resisting Tyranny.”  During her time with us she will help us explore our attitudes and assumptions about how we read the Bible\, and push us to think about how we might best use our power as students\, teachers and preachers of Scripture.

DESCRIPTION:A Conversation with Melissa Rogers \nAuthor of Faith in American Public Life and “A Time To Heal\, A Time To Build” \n  \nHow will religious liberty be defined for our nation in the future\, and how can we individually and collectively model a definition that protects religion from government and government from religion\, while still advocating for the public good? \n  The results and aftermath of the November 3 election have indicated that our country is even more divided than we thought. While President Elect Biden won support among people of faith by pledging to “Restore the soul of America\,” in many cases those gains were made at the expense of internal cohesion within communities of faith.  Here in Dallas\, faith leaders and people of faith feel the stress and strain of this most recent election\, and the 4 years that led up to it. We are being called upon to heal wounds and bridge divides but it is hard to know where to begin\, when faith-based arguments have lent credibility and support to polarized and partisan candidates\, platforms and policies.  We live in a country that was founded on the separation of church and state\, so what does it mean for public officials to rely on faith-based arguments when advocating for\, determining\, or carrying out national laws and norms?  Reasonable people will have different answers to this question based on their understanding of the meaning of religious liberty. As E.J. Dionne says in his introduction to Melissa Roger’s book\, “One of the tragedies of our politics is that religious liberty has been transformed from a bedrock American principle into a partisan and ideological slogan.”    Join Faith Commons to learn about the historical and contemporary understandings of religious liberty in America from Melissa Rogers. Following her presentation\, we will engage in conversation with one another about how own choices and behavior shape the meaning and experience of religious liberty in our faith communities and in the public square. SUMMARY:Religion in the Public Square: What Are the Limits?
DESCRIPTION:The First Amendment’s Establishment Clause prohibits the government from making any law “respecting an establishment of religion.” This clause not only forbids the government from establishing an official religion\, but also prohibits government actions that unduly favor one religion over another. It also prohibits the government from unduly preferring religion over non-religion\, or non-religion over religion.  \nFaith Commons was created to promote the common good through encouraging people of all faiths and none to bring their spiritual identities and convictions to learn about\, discuss and respond to issues affecting society and culture together. We have assumed that this can be done in ways that do not undermine the Establishment Clause. \nSo how should we respond when elected officials bring their faith convictions to bear on civil ceremonies and celebrations? Is it possible to support prayer before sessions of congress and city council meetings\, but object when the mayor of Ennis won’t allow women to lead that prayer? And what should we think when the mayor of Dallas issues a proclamation declaring a “Day of Prayer and Fasting to Eradicate Coronavirus“?  \nPastor George Mason and Rabbi Nancy Kasten will discuss these questions with Dr. Mark Chancey\, Professor of Religious Studies at SMU and distinguished fellow at the REligious Freedom Center of the Freedom Forum Institute.  \nThe conversation will be live streamed on Faith Commons’ Facebook page and on the website. \n
