SUMMARY:State of our Faith: DISD Bond Propositions
DESCRIPTION:Whether or not you have voted yet in Dallas County\, you are likely confused about the bond propositions at the very end of your ballot. Advocates say they will not increase the property tax rate\, but it says RIGHT ON THE BALLOT: “This is a property tax increase”! \nJoin us as we speak with DISD Board Member Miguel Solis about why passing this bond is so important\, what will happen if we don’t pass it\, and the impact on public schools when state lawmakers require that all school district bond proposals include “this is a property tax increase” language on the ballot\, regardless of the impact on local tax rates. \nIf you have questions\, email us beforehand: cameron@faithcommons.org\, or you can ask them in the chat during the Facebook Live event. \nRSVP below for a good reminder and direct link right before the event!

SUMMARY:How to Vote Safely in the 2020 Election
DESCRIPTION:This year’s election will be unlike any other due to COVID-19\, the removal of straight-party ticket voting\, the reduced number of polling places\, and the fact that\, due to an increase in vote-by-mail ballots\, the outcome of the election will almost certainly not be determined on November 3 or 4. \nCOVID-19 concerns\, efforts to cast doubt on the integrity of the election\, and threats of voter intimidation have increased anxiety about showing up to vote. \nPlease join Reverend George Mason and Rabbi Nancy Kasten as they discuss what you can do to protect your physical health\, the integrity of your vote\, and a fair and safe election in Dallas County with three distinguished guests: \n\nRobert Elkin\, retired lawyer\, Chair of Temple Emanu-El’s Civic Engagement Campaign\, a director of March to the Polls\, a non-partisan voter registration and engagment\, and a founding member of Dallas VOTES\nDr. Philip Huang\, Director and Health Authority\, Dallas County Health and Human Services Department\nReverend Jaime Kowlessar\, Senior Pastor\, City Temple SDA\, Faith in Texas Clergy Table and member of Dallas VOTES\n\nThey will discuss: \n\nThe options open for Dallas County residents to vote and how to choose the best option for you\nThe Adopt-A-Polling Site initiative that communities of faith can participate in\, and\nPublic health recommendations for casting your ballot and working as a poll worker or volunteer elections moniter.\n\nThe event will be live-streamed on Faith Commons’ Facebook page. Viewers will be able to ask questions in the Facebook chat\, or text a question to 704-962-5735. RSVP for an email reminder and a direct link before the start of the show.

SUMMARY:The Road to Liberation
DESCRIPTION:From FAITH IN TEXAS: \nJoin us for the Road to Liberation Launch Event in partnership with our friends at Faith Forward Dallas\, Faith Commons\, Raise Your Voice\, and Elev8 Movement. At the launch\, we will share our faith-centered analysis of how policing and mass incarceration have been rooted in this lie\, and how people from all races\, faiths\, and backgrounds can work together to forge a new path towards true community safety. We’ll offer breakout sessions to explore how racism shows up in our lives and communities\, and how we can take action to disrupt and dismantle it. Finally\, we will take action together to let our community and our leaders know that we will no longer submit to the chains of racist systems.

SUMMARY:Religion in the Public Square: What Are the Limits?
DESCRIPTION:The First Amendment’s Establishment Clause prohibits the government from making any law “respecting an establishment of religion.” This clause not only forbids the government from establishing an official religion\, but also prohibits government actions that unduly favor one religion over another. It also prohibits the government from unduly preferring religion over non-religion\, or non-religion over religion.  \nFaith Commons was created to promote the common good through encouraging people of all faiths and none to bring their spiritual identities and convictions to learn about\, discuss and respond to issues affecting society and culture together. We have assumed that this can be done in ways that do not undermine the Establishment Clause. \nSo how should we respond when elected officials bring their faith convictions to bear on civil ceremonies and celebrations? Is it possible to support prayer before sessions of congress and city council meetings\, but object when the mayor of Ennis won’t allow women to lead that prayer? And what should we think when the mayor of Dallas issues a proclamation declaring a “Day of Prayer and Fasting to Eradicate Coronavirus“? \nPastor George Mason and Rabbi Nancy Kasten will discuss these questions with Dr. Mark Chancey\, Professor of Religious Studies at SMU and distinguished fellow at the REligious Freedom Center of the Freedom Forum Institute.  \nThe conversation will be live streamed on Faith Commons’ Facebook page and on the website. \n
