Dallas Faith Leaders Urge City Officials to Reaffirm Commitment to Racial Equity

Press Conference | August 11, 2025 | Dallas City Hall

In response to the Trump administration’s threat to withhold more than $300 million in federal funding unless Dallas abandons its racial equity efforts, faith leaders from across the city gathered at Dallas City Hall to speak with one voice: Racial equity is essential to justice, and the work must continue.

This press conference was organized by Faith Commons and featured clergy and community leaders from a range of traditions, including:

  • Rev. Dr. George Mason, President, Faith Commons
  • Rev. Dr. Frederick D. Haynes III, Senior Pastor, Friendship-West Baptist Church
  • Rev. Victoria Powers, Senior Pastor, Royal Lane Baptist Church
  • Rev. Dr. Todd Atkins, Senior Pastor, Salem Institutional Baptist Church
  • Hon. Casey Thomas, former Dallas City Councilmember
  • Hon. Omar Narvaez, former Dallas City Councilmember
  • Almas Muscatwalla, Community Leader

Together, these leaders denounced the unjust ultimatum, affirmed the city’s moral and civic responsibility to pursue equity, and called on public officials to continue this critical work with courage and resolve.
